My IDOLS!

God viewed idolatry worship as prostitution. It was indeed an act of defiance by God’s people, an act of ingratitude of what God has done. God was sad and angry. At times, the Bible can be quite long-winded. Ever since the downfall of men in Genesis, God had been sending many reminders (through prophets, through dreams) to the Israelites to remind them to turn away from their idolatry and to repent. Yet, only few heed the calling.

Today, we no longer worship idols made from gold. Instead, we worship idols made from intangible things. When a person or material possessions mean more to us than living to please the Lord, that person or thing becomes our idol. What are some of the examples of today’s idols? They are success, money, power, popularity, gaining man’s approval, and many more. On the surface, those are not sins and I am not saying that we should neglect that in order to please God. However, as what we have been learning, if we put those things above God, those have become our idols. Examine yourself. What do you worship in your life? What matters to you right now? We may not see the immediate harm done to us but slowly, our idols will cause us to draw away from God. We can be so blinded by the enemy to the things around us that we are surprised by our separation from God. We can lie to ourselves and think that everything is all right and as a matter of fact, things are perfectly fine. We can tell ourselves that our relationship with Christ is fine. But at the end of the day, the truth will be revealed in our lives: The fruits of the Spirit or the works of the flesh? (Galatians 5:19-23)There can only be one master in our lives. It is impossible to serve more than one master. Jesus already warned us on that. In Matthew 6:24, Jesus said “No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money”. The money here applies to our idols.

In conclusion, let us take the commission Joshua gave to the Israelites (Joshua 24:14-15):
“Now fear the Lord and serve Him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshipped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”
